For a few months, K and I stopped having regular date nights. It doesn’t sound like a big deal – I mean, we live together right? We see each other every day and spend a lot of time together. But realistically, how much of that time is actually quality time? How much of that time is spent concentrating on each other and on communicating with each other, instead of just being in the same room? It became clear that we needed to start spending more quality time with each other.
For our first date night in a while, we went to the Winter Festival in Darling Harbour a few months ago and went ice-skating together. After that, we used one of my Entertainment Book vouchers (one free main meal when you purchase another main meal) to go out to dinner together at Blue Fish on Darling Harbour.
To start we ordered two lemonades – a elderflower lemonade for me (tart, flowery and refreshing) and a ginger lemonade for K. Not bad value at around $5 each, though something makes me doubt whether it’s actually home-made lemonade.
K took the 2009 recommendation by the I Love Food Awards, and ordered what were reportedly the best fish and chips in Australia. …the accolade was misplaced. Don’t get me wrong – the fish was quite well done in terms of not being too heavily battered but still crispy and crunchy on the outside and tender and flaky on the inside. The chips were very disappointing though, and started to tend towards the soggy side. Not the best fish and chips we’ve ever had…and I doubt that they’re the best fish and chips in Australia.
I had a real craving for creamy clam chowder served in a bread bowl, like the awesome version I had at Boudin on Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco back in 2011. This didn’t quite hit the spot the way Boudin’s version did – the soup itself was alright, but the bread bowl was on the soft side, and didn’t have the crusty sourdough appeal of Boudin’s bread bowl. The garlic bread lid was delicious though – nice and crisp and buttery!
To finish, we shared a slice of salted caramel mud cake, which was on the specials menu. I’m a real sucker for salted caramel, and this dessert caught my eye immediately! I really enjoyed the cake – the sponge was moist and very more-ish, and the icing was melt-in-your-mouth delicious. Luckily we chose to share this slice, as it was ginormous.
Overall, Blue Fish Seafood Restaurant is very overpriced for what you get. With my voucher we ended up paying around $30 each – which is reasonable. Without the voucher, it would have been $45 each…it’s just not worth it when you can get a much more satisfying and memorable meal elsewhere for the same price. Only go if you have a voucher, otherwise go elsewhere for your fish and chips fix. I won’t be back.
