Review: Sydney Picnic Company (and a special announcement)

A few weekends ago, K surprised me on the weekend with the announcement that we were going to Sydney Olympic Park for a day of bike riding and a picnic. We started the day with a quick breakfast in Wholemeal Cafe where I had some fantastic protein pancakes – delicious! After breakfast, we dropped by the Sydney Picnic Company to pick up the picnic that K ordered – the Sydney Picnic package.

Beautifully presented in a rustic style burlap bag, Sydney Picnic Company did a wonderful job with presentation with cute hand-stitched personalised menus and stamped wooden utensils. We drove then to Sydney Olympic Park with growing trepidation as the sky grew darker and darker and the clouds began to roll in.

By the time we got there, it was absolutely pouring down with rain with no sign of the rain abating. We definitely weren’t going to be cycling that day – but why waste a good picnic? We put down the back seat in the back of the car, and settled ourselves for a car picnic.

Unpacking the picnic bag, I was extremely impressed with the attention to detail that Sydney Picnic Company brought to their packages – I mean, the red paper packaging around the bread matched to the napkins, and hand-written tags on the food? Wonderful.

Our first course is prawns with a spicy salt and pepper dipping sauce. The prawns are super fresh and firm, and the tangy spicy sauce was the perfect accompaniment to the otherwise simple dish. A light and refreshing starter course.

We moved onto a cold Spanish style salad with crispy smokey chorizo, marinated tomatoes and wonderful crunchy almonds. I avoided the feta, but again it was a simple dish done extremely well.

Our mains was a pasta dish, but unique in that they’ve chosen to use fregola which I’ve never really had before but reminds me of pearl cous cous which is a favourite of mine. This dish is perfectly balanced both in terms of flavours and textures – the softer fregola went really well with the crunchier toasted pepitas and crispy snap of the sweet sugar snaps.

We finish our meal with some of the more luscious, soft, rich and moist chocolate brownies I’ve ever tasted. The cranberry and almond gave the brownie a bit of interesting flavour and texture as well.

Now…a confession. Going for a romantic picnic in the park isn’t something that K and I do on a regular basis. It was a special occasion, and I knew something was going to happen…especially as we had gone to a jewellers late last year to design a ring together.

And so he popped the question! It wasn’t quite what he was planning as he ended up going down on one knee in the boot of the car (we have a hatchback), but it happened, and it was special, and romantic, and perfect for us. It’s been great sharing the news with all our family and friends, and I’m so excited to finally share this news with you, my readers.

  1. Once again congratulations Amanda, the ring is beautiful, this is such a special time for you both. I love the way K planned to pop the question over a beautiful picnic, shame about the rain but nothing would have dampened your excitement on that day, how perfect.

  2. Massive, massive congratulations to the two of you! I’m so excited that it’s official now. And I kind of like the whole rain thing – it almost seems like it’s out of a movie. The ring is beautiful and I’m just so incredibly thrilled for you!

  3. Congratulations from Arizona! The picnic looked delicious, I’ve been reading your blog for several months, but haven’t left any comments, but an engagement is special so I decided to break my silence.
