Most of you probably don’t know that the absolute love of my life (even more so than K) is my gorgeous cat, Mr Fitzwilliam Darcy. I rescued him from a terrible home in a lower socio-economic area when he was barely six weeks old – he was living in his own filth, in a cardboard box in a dark room with the rest of the kittens of the litter. They were absolutely horrifying conditions, and I am thankful that I was able to give him a loving home.
Since that time, I’ve been a minor animal rights crusader – advocating for the adoption of animals from shelters over the purchase of pedigrees from pet stores, promoting the special love that only caring for a pet can generate, etc. That’s why I was so pleased to be able to attend the wrap party last night for Parched March, a fundraising event in support of the Animal Welfare League of NSW.
Held on the gorgeous second level of the famous ivy bar in the centre of Sydney, the event saw guests mingling with pooches on the dancefloor, as the signature cocktails from the Parched March event were showcased on the night. With celebrity attendees such as TV vet Dr Katrina Warren and Rex Lee from the TV show Entourage, it was a real VIP event designed to promote an important cause.
As part of the event, there was a live auction of some art pieces that had been created by various Australian celebrity ambassadors. From paintings to sculptures to a custom designed Mambo surfboard, each item was crafted to represent the animals that the auction funds would be benefiting.
A cheer went up across the room when it was announced after the auction that the event had raised $40,000 for the Animal Welfare League of NSW. I’m proud to have been able to contribute to that amount with my small donation on the night, knowing that my dollars are going towards animals in need.
You too, could bring someone like my gorgeous companion, Mr Fitzwilliam Darcy, into your life.
